What are Domain Names?

A domain name is used to identify the location of a web site on the Internet.

Register YOUR domain names now, before someone registers them first. You do not have to host a domain after registering. The domain can be "parked" or left dormant, until you are ready to use it. Later, you can ask us to activate them, by using one of our web hosting packages.

What are the domain name rules and restrictions?

Australian domain names:

.com.au and .net.au
  • An exact match of the business’ name or trademark
  • An abbreviation of the business’ name or trademark
  • An acronym of the business’ name or trademark
  • Product that the business manufactures or sells
  • A program that the business administers
  • An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains
  • A service that your business provides
  • A venue that the business operates
  • A profession that is practised by the business’ employees or members
  • An event that your business organises or sponsors
  • Place names in Australia are disallowed as domain names
  • Domain names can be 2 to 63 letters, and words can be separated by hyphens, but not spaces

Charities, or not-for-profit organisations, must be a registered business to acquire an org.au domain name. They must meet one of the following criteria.

  • Product that the business manufactures or sells
  • A program that the business administers
  • An activity that your business facilitates, teaches or trains
  • A service that your business provides
  • A venue that the business operates
  • A profession that is practised by the business’ employees or members
  • An event that your business organises or sponsors

Policy free, anyone can register any domain name, regardless of their rights to that domain name. If you own a company name, or a trademark, it does not prevent someone registering that name.
